About Us
The Fowler Center is situated on just over 200-acres in Mayville, Michigan - the thumb of the state. Our picturesque setting on beautiful Harmon Lake features meadows, forests, and a lakefront where there is plenty of opportunities for exploration and fun. Our facilities and program are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and licensed by the State of Michigan as an Adult Foster Care Camp and a Children’s Camp. To receive our ACA Accreditation we agree to operate by meeting, or exceeding, over 300 industry standards in the areas of administration, health & safety, food service, facility management, and program design.
We offer year-round programming for children, teens and adults. Emphasis is placed on the ability of each camper to participate in camping experiences according to his or her physical, cognitive, and psychological abilities. A concerted effort is made to remove any possible barriers and to create a secure, positive, and reinforcing environment. All of our programs are designed to meet the physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and motivational needs of our campers. We have a large, central dining hall and activity center where campers congregate for group dining, special events, and important social interaction. Surrounding this facility are 4 modern cabins, which provide group living arrangements during overnight sessions and an opportunity for campers to develop true friendships. Our cabins sleep 12 with a shared bathroom in-between each room of 6 campers. Our cabins are heated and in 2010 air conditioners were added to the four main cabins. We also have 2 newer style ranch cabins that sleep 6 campers each.
Throughout the grounds of The Fowler Center are numerous activity areas designed with our campers in mind. This includes a central outdoor gathering spot for traditional campfires, camp songs, and flag raising ceremonies. It also includes a raised bed vegetable garden that campers tend, an accessible high ropes challenge course, an accessible tree house, an accessible rock climbing wall, and platforms for outdoor camping. We’re situated on a beautiful lake for water activities including swimming and boating. Additional structures at the camp include our Equestrian Center, built in 2006, for therapeutic riding.
The Fowler Center serves thousands each year. Our goal is to offer a safe and comfortable environment so campers leave with memories of an enjoyable away-from-home experience, as well as new-found self-esteem, friendships, and pride.
The Fowler Center is a program of MCHS Family of Services. MCHS is a private, non-profit, human service agency located in Redford, MI. To find out more about other programs visit www.mchsmi.org.
